How can we protect and correct these “air pollutions”?

There is always solution and preventive measures to take, but we need to accept that the factors that affect the indoor air quality cannot be under control completely, as the quality of the indoor air can be influenced by various outside factors such as natural environment and the surrounding areas which are mostly out of our own control. Therefore, the most practical way is to try your best and select the most appropriate location as possible to work and live, especially those who have to work in the big crowded city like Bangkok or those who have to live and work near the industrial zone.

  Air pollution    Suggested actions
  Bacteria
  • Clean used dishes, and try to avoid leaving piles of dishes for cleaning once.
  • Empty the trash bin frequently. Tie the knot of the trash bag as well as classify trash by its category for easier management and being environmental friendly.
  • Set up the regular cleaning routine to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust in the house.
  • Avoid leaving piles of used clothes waiting for laundry once a week, for instance, as the fungi can build up and that we can hardly notice from our bare eyes. Meanwhile, the sweat and rancid odor can stick deep into the fiber of the clothes making it more difficult to remove later.
  Fungi
  • Repair all water leaking spots and pipes to prevent the build-up of mold and fungi.
  • Improve indoor air ventilation by encouraging air movement and open windows for new fresh air.
  • Repair all undrained water spots especially at the toilet and kitchen.
  • For any rooms with rugs and carpets, frequently clean the carpets to prevent any build-up of fungi and molds.
  • Empty trash bin frequently and regularly especially food leftovers and rotten foods.
  • Clean the fridge, remove old and expired food from the fridge to prevent the source of bacteria and the contamination to the good food.
  • Clean the shoe cabinet and wipe clean the shoes before keeping them back to the cabinet. The wearing shoes usually have moist from foot sweats, which can be further developed into fungi especially being kept in the dark cool place as the shoe cabinet.
  Dust
  • Tackle all dust collecting items such as plush dolls, carpets, and curtains, by keeping them in place, and frequent vacuum.
  • Set up a regular home cleaning routine
  • Plant some trees around the house to help filter dust from the surround areas.
  • Change bedsheet regularly and frequently
  • Tidy up the book shelf. If possible, select one with closing doors to prevent dust, as books are one of the key dust collecting items.
  • Avoid using carpets, as they are considered key dust collecting items.
  • Clean the air filter of the air conditioning unit frequently, by removing from the air conditioning unit for rinsing with water.
  Asbestos
  • Avoid areas with construction, demolition, and /or renovation, as the removal of the old construction materials may have some asbestos remnants diffused in the area.
  • Select the construction materials that are not made from asbestos, if possible. Otherwise, take great cautions in using them and when it times for removal.
  • Select the insulation made from rubber instead of asbestos, especially in the office building that needs the insulators for the air duct pipes. The tearing of the asbestos insulators inside the air ducts can be found especially after the installation, construction, and renovation of the site. The dangerous asbestos remnants can flow through the air duct pipes and disperse into the working area.
  VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
  • Reduce the use of cleaning chemical inside the house, and try to select the ones with natural extracts sources.
  • Stop using aerosol spray.
  • When buying new furniture i.e., plywood furniture or plastic equipment, open the window to reduce the concentration of volatile compounds indoor.
  • When using glue or paints, ensure that the ventilation is proper. Wearing industrial mask is also recommended.
  • Do not buy a big lot of cleaning chemical as they can release dangerous chemical vapor.
  • Do not store cleaning chemical or glue or paints inside the air conditioned room, to prevent the leakage of chemical flow into the air conditioning system and the possible dispersing chemical throughout the area.
  Ozone
  • Avoid staying in any rooms with ozone generator. Ensure that you study the warning instructions to best use the equipment safely.
  • Avoid the office equipment with ozone emission.
  • Avoid using lawn mower under hot sun, as the gas from engine combustion can combined with the heat from sun light making a chemical reaction to generate dangerous ground level ozone.
  • No smoking inside the house and any other indoor places.
  • Plant some trees indoor to help absorb ozone and other air pollutions.
  • Open the windows to encourage good air ventilation (in the case that the air outside is not polluted.)
  Carbon Dioxide
  • Avoid crowded placed and bad ventilation, as there can be accumulating carbon dioxide from the people there.
  • For the offices, the peak hours with number of peoples coming in and out of the area can mark a high carbon dioxide up to the level beyond safety points. The ventilation management is recommended to reduce the test result of this gas.
  Other air pollution gases
  • Check the leakage spots on wall and floor to prevent the leakage of pollutions from outside.
  • Manage the ventilation flow inside the house
  • No smoking indoor
  • If the garage is close to the house and the entrance, ensure to leave for a while after tuning off the engine before opening the house door, to avoid the flow of car smokes into the house.
  • Likewise, for a more public area like office building or condominium, if the elevator or entrance to the main building is at the car park, it is better to install the curtain air conditioner or the air door. This can prevent the pollution, unconditioned air (at different temperature), and even some insects from entering into the main area inside.
  Odor
  • Set up a proper cleaning scheme on the regular basis
  • Eliminate spots with accumulation of dirt, dust, and trashes
  • Open windows for fresh air
  • Maintain good ventilation system
